Domus Artium is the prestigious international circuit of concerts and events in the patrician residences of Lazio and the capital, created by Barrett Wissman, well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist in the classical music field, already founder of the Tuscan Sun Festival, created in the nearby town of Cortona. Persinsala recently witnessed the event held at the Castello Ruspoli in Vignanello, where it was possible to listen to the wonderful performance of an exceptional duet, violinist Hilary Hahn and pianist Andreas Haefliger, struggling with Beethoven. Also, the collaboration between Domus Artium and Palazzo and Galleria Colonna has given shape to an innovative cultural format, which sees for the first time the opening of one of the most precious and evocative private historical buildings in Rome on the occasion of concerts for the general public. The extraordinary Galleria Colonna, an authentic jewel of the Roman Baroque, will host five concerts of the highest international profile. It begins Monday, March 14 with Hélène Grimaud, one of the most established and eclectic pianists of classical music, and continue on April 2nd with Luca Pisaroni, famous Italian bass baritone, whose repertoire ranges from baroque opera to Rossini. A few days before the start of the event, we asked some questions to the director and creator of the project, Barrett Wissman.

The very pleasurable and of obvious of the cultural proposal is a clear sign of your marked sensitivity to the contemporary music scene. What has been the response of the Italian audience? Can we talk about an awakening of interest in classical music as well toward the younger crowd?
Barrett Wissman: «The response of the Italian public has been very good. I believe that it isn’t just about the programming however. Especially after Covid, the public is looking for experience that can bring people closer to each other. There is no doubt that the artistic level must be of the absolute highest quality. At the same time, that in and of itself does not guarantee public interest as we know. I think the combination of having a stunning location, and great partners like chefs, fine wines etc makes the entire offering enticing for the public. People also like to come together in an intimate atmosphere where they can interact with the artist as well. My firm belief that quality can attract anyone whether they are young, old or somewhere in between. In this sense, we are seeing younger people coming and as Domus Artium becomes more well known and where they can enjoy a concert without feeling like they are stuck in a seat in a formal concert hall, we will see even more young people attending».

Can the smashing collaboration with the Palazzo and the Galleria Colonna be read as an attempt to innovate the way classical music is appreciated, usually confined to theatres and auditoriums? In your opinion, what is the added value of a musical experience in such an exclusive location?
BW: «I believe that this was partially answered in the first question. I think people are attracted by different senses. The ability to enjoy a beautiful environment and the other offerings we have make the musical experience itself more enjoyable and organic as well. In fact, this is the way this music was originally enjoyed. Many of these composers had their works commissioned by similar families to the ones that are hosting our concerts. They were performed in these locations for the family and friends and not in an auditorium».

How do you choose the personalities involved in the Domus Artium project? How much does the consideration of the communicative ability of artists or the preferences expressed by the social world affect your choices?
BW: «For me, absolute quality is first and foremost. Without that, the rest doesn’t matter whether it is a strong presence on social media or another asset. Secondly, the artist must be one that I know can communicate, whether it is musically or otherwise. Lastly, many of the relationships we have made over the years are collaborations that come from many years of working together, friendship and trust. These are definitely not “normal” concerts and they require the artist to believe in the concept and idea».
